From time to time we get questions or complaints from those looking
to adopt or foster one of our Rottweilers. They don’t understand why we go
through the process we do in order to place one of our Rotties in a loving home.
One of the main reasons is so this (left photo) doesn't happen! Many of our dogs come from
shelters where they were within hours or even minutes of being euthanized.
Others have been abused and neglected and we want to make sure that never
happens again.
Our goal is to place our rescued Rottweilers and Rottweiler mixes
in forever homes where they will be a vital, loved and nurtured part of a
family. Our adoption process involves
learning extensively about our potential adopters or fosters so we can ensure
the dog and the potential adopter(s) or foster(s) are the best possible match.
Please realize that there might be characteristics of particular dogs, that you
aren’t aware of, which would prevent them from being a good match for you and
your family, other pets, and/or your home environment. You must directly
contact the foster parent of any dog you
would like to learn more about.
In order to adopt of foster one of our rescued Rottweilers you MUST
fill out our online FOSTER or ADOPTION application. SSRR will not transport any Rottweiler to anyone
who has not been approved by SSRR. In order to be approved, we require a Vet
reference and 3 personal references. You're dogs (and cats) need to be UTD with
shots, must be spayed or neutered (unless there is a valid reason they can't
be). You should have a fenced in yard. We do not allow underground fencing as
the primary source of confinement for a Rottweiler. Studies have shown that
despite training, very strong-willed dogs, such as Rottweilers, will cross that
underground barrier if the drive to chase is strong. Further, underground
fences do not keep out other animals (or children) who want to enter the yard,
and therefore can allow your dog to be subjected to diseases or injuries, or to
cause injury to another person or animal. This could be a source of liability
for the owner and/or having to give up your dog, or have it euthanized.
The final step of our process is a Home Visit. If your application
has passed the reference check process, you will be contacted by a rescue volunteer to set up an
appointment. A Home Visit is part of the adoption process required by the
Bylaws of SSRR; however, a Home Visit alone does not guarantee approval to
adopt, or to adopt a particular dog.
